Job Skills
Role Overview
Schools choose BackPR because we combine enrollment growth with uncompromising safety. The Head of Trust & Safety Engineering is the senior lead responsible for the policies, tooling, and automation that protect student data, communications, and crisis workflows across our platform.
You will partner closely with Product, Infrastructure, Legal, and Client Strategy to ensure every feature meets privacy, safeguarding, and continuity standards across every geography we support.
What you will lead
- Architect and operate BackPR’s trust, safety, and compliance stack end to end, aligning to FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, and state-level regulations.
- Build runbooks, detection, and response capabilities that let schools escalate crisis communications through BackPR with confidence.
- Establish a proactive risk management program covering vulnerability management, vendor oversight, and third-party assessments.
- Guide senior engineers and cross-functional partners through the secure development lifecycle, from design reviews to post-incident analysis.
Experience that sets you up for success
- Executive-level ownership of trust and safety, platform security, or compliance for a SaaS product that serves regulated customers.
- Hands-on depth with identity, access, encryption, audit logging, and incident response automation.
- Comfortable briefing boards, legal counsel, and customer leadership on risk posture and mitigations.
- Track record building strong relationships with engineering peers, product leaders, and customer-facing teams.
How we operate
- Remote-first team that collaborates asynchronously with deliberate, documented processes.
- Direct access to the CEO, General Counsel, and advisory council for fast decisions on policy and incident response.
- A nimble senior engineering bench that values pragmatic safeguards and data-backed feedback loops.
Location & schedule
- Fully remote across the United States and Canada with a minimum four-hour overlap to Eastern Time.
- Virtual quarterly security program reviews and tabletop exercises coordinated across time zones.
- Support for flexible schedules so long as core trust and safety guardrails are maintained.
Compensation & benefits
- Base salary range: $220,000 - $260,000 USD with annual performance incentives tied to risk reduction.
- Executive medical, dental, and vision coverage plus dependent support.
- 401(k) with company match, paid family leave, and annual security certification stipend.
- Dedicated budget for tooling, tabletop simulations, and external assessments.
Impact in the first year
- A unified trust and safety roadmap with measurable reduction in risk across the BackPR workspace.
- Hardened crisis communications and safeguarding workflows adopted by 100% of Growth and Leadership plan customers.
- Documented compliance posture and third-party audit trail that shortens security reviews for prospective districts and partners.
